Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: The Honest Answer (Not Marketing Fluff)
Most QR generator websites push dynamic codes because dynamic codes require a subscription. Here's the honest version: half the use cases on Earth are fine with free static codes. The other half genuinely need dynamic. Here's how to tell which one you have.
The 30-second version

Use static when...
The destination will never change
WiFi password QR for your Airbnb. A Spotify playlist link on a wedding favor. Your business's permanent contact card. None of these change. Static is fine.
You don't need to track scans
If you don't care how many people scanned, where they were, what device they used — there's no reason to pay for dynamic.
You're worried about lock-in
This is the sneaky reason to use static. A dynamic code is hosted on someone's server. If that company shuts down or you stop paying, every printed code in the wild becomes a 404. Static codes work forever, no provider needed.
Use dynamic when...
You're printing it on something physical
The classic case: 5,000 flyers go to print. Two days later, the marketing campaign URL changes. With static, you reprint. With dynamic, you log in, change the destination, every flyer in the wild now points to the right page.
You want analytics
Dynamic codes route through a redirect, which means scans can be counted, located, and analyzed. If you're spending money on the printed material, you should know which prints are pulling their weight.
The destination should change based on context
Time of day (breakfast menu in the morning, dinner menu at night). Geography (region-specific landing pages). Device (App Store on iOS, Play Store on Android). All of this requires a dynamic code that re-routes per scan.
It's mission-critical and you might typo the URL
Print 10,000 copies of a static QR with a typo'd URL and you're reprinting 10,000 copies. Print 10,000 copies of a dynamic QR with a typo'd destination and you fix it in the dashboard. The risk math alone justifies dynamic for any large print run.
The trap nobody warns you about
Dynamic QR codes use a short redirect URL that contains the provider's domain. If that provider goes out of business — or even just discontinues the product — every code you printed is dead. Permanently.

The hybrid trick most people miss
