How to Make a Digital Business Card with a QR Code (Free, in About Two Minutes)

A digital business card is two things: a page with your contact details on it, and a QR code that opens that page. That is the entire product. Once you see it that way, building one takes about two minutes — and most of those two minutes go on deciding what the card should say, not on fighting a tool.

What you are actually building

Every digital business card has two halves, and people mix them up constantly:

  • The destination — what opens when someone scans. A contact file, a small page about you, or a booking link.
  • The code — the square pattern that points at the destination.

The code is the easy half. Any generator makes one in seconds. The destination is where the real decision lives, and it decides whether a scan becomes a saved contact or a shrug.

Step 1 — Decide where the scan lands

Before you open anything, answer one question: what should happen ten seconds after someone scans this?

  • "I want to be in their phone." Point the code at a vCard — the contact-file format every phone already understands. Scan, tap add contact, done.
  • "I want them to see what I do." Point it at a small page with your photo, role, links and a save-contact button.
  • "I want a meeting booked." Point it straight at your scheduling link and skip the middle step entirely.

None of these is universally correct — they are three different jobs. We pull that decision apart properly in what actually goes on the back of the card. For now, pick one and keep moving.

Step 2 — Write the details down first

Open a note and type the finished text before you touch a generator. Name. Role. Company. Phone. Email. One link. One line about what you actually do for people.

That is the whole card. The most common failure here is treating a digital card like a résumé: five links, three phone numbers, a bio, a portfolio, a newsletter signup. A business card has one job — to make you reachable and rememberable. Everything else is a website, and you can link to it.

Step 3 — Generate the code

  1. Open the digital business card template. It is pre-shaped for contact details, so you are filling in fields rather than starting from an empty box.
  2. Paste in the destination you chose in step 1, or fill in the contact fields directly.
  3. Watch the live preview. The pattern gets denser as you add data — that is normal, and it matters for step 5.
  4. Download the PNG for screens, or the SVG or PDF if it is going to print. Vector formats stay sharp at any size; a small PNG blown up to poster width will not.

Step 4 — Static or dynamic

This is the one genuinely consequential choice, and it is worth thirty seconds of thought.

A static code bakes the destination into the pattern. It is free, it works forever with no provider involved, and it can never be changed. A dynamic code points at a redirect you control, so you can change where it goes after the code is printed — and scans can be counted.

Business cards are close to the strongest argument for dynamic that exists, for a boring reason: the data on a business card is the data most likely to change. People change jobs, titles, numbers and companies. A static card printed with last year's role is a card you throw away. A dynamic one you edit in the dashboard, and the card in someone's wallet updates itself.

The counter-argument is real too: a dynamic code depends on the provider staying up. Static vs dynamic QR codes is the honest version of that trade-off. Static generation is free here; dynamic codes sit on the paid plans, and the current split is on the pricing page.

Step 5 — Make sure it still scans

A business card is the hardest surface a QR code has to survive, because it is small and designers like to make it pretty. Four rules keep it readable:

  • Keep the contrast strong. Dark pattern on a light background. Light-on-dark works on many phones but not all of them, and a business card is not the place to gamble.
  • Leave the quiet zone. The empty margin around the code is part of the code. Crowding text right up against it is the single most common reason a card fails to scan.
  • Keep it big enough. Around 2cm square is a sensible floor for something held at arm's length. Shorter destinations make sparser, more forgiving patterns.
  • Go easy on the logo. A centre logo is fine — a large one eats the error-correction budget that was keeping the code readable.

The colour, shape and logo controls live in QR design, which also shows you the preview while you push it. Then print one test card and scan it with a cheap phone in bad light before you order five hundred.

Step 6 — Put it where people will actually meet it

The card is not finished when the file downloads. It is finished when it is somewhere a scan can happen:

  • The back of your paper card, where the empty side already is
  • Your phone's lock screen or wallet, so you can hand it over without hunting
  • Your email signature
  • A sticker on your laptop lid
  • A conference badge, or the corner of a video-call background
  • The window of the shop, studio or booth

If your card should route people differently depending on when or where they scan — a booking link during business hours, a portfolio at a weekend market — that is what smart pages handle, and it needs a dynamic code.

The two-minute version

  1. Decide what should happen after the scan: save a contact, see a page, or book a slot.
  2. Write the text out in a note.
  3. Fill in the template and download the file.
  4. Pick static if it will never change, dynamic if it will.
  5. Print one, scan it in bad light, then print the rest.
